The Idaho State Board of Education does not have a separate state loan program, nor does it add any benefits to federal loan programs. It does have the Education Incentive Loan Forgiveness Program for teaching or nursing careers. To be eligible, a student must:
be a resident of Idaho
be a full-time student
maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better in the first two semesters
teach or nurse in Idaho for at least two years after graduation
The federal guarantor for the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP) in Idaho was the Student Loan Fund of Idaho, Inc., but now all federal loans come from the Direct loan program.
The State Board of Education oversees the Robert R. Lee Promise scholarship program. Originally, this scholarship was worth $500 per year for the first two years of college, but it was reduced to $400 in the 2009-2010 school year and it will remain at that amount for 2011-2012. To be eligible, a student must graduate with a B average, and go to a college in Idaho.
There is also Idaho Governor's Cup Scholarship, which are given to thirteen high school seniors and are worth $3,000 per year (renewable). A 2.8+ GPA and a provable record of public service are the main requirements.
The Idaho Opportunity Scholarship is available as a last chance grant for students who have already made a family or individual contribution, but still have need. Up to $1,200 can be awarded to a student each year.
Find other college grants and scholarships for Idahoans, and if you need private loans to supplement state and federal aid, look at credit unions to find a private loan lender (or compare private lenders using the form at the top, right).
