The only school loans that the South Dakota Board of Regents recommends are federal student loans.

Schools in South Dakota mostly use the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP).

The state guarantor for these loans is the private, nonprofit, Education Assistance Corporation (EAC).

EAC does not make any type of loans itself; it simply originates and services loans made by participating lenders.

The state does not offer any added benefits for these federal loans.

Most financial aid in South Dakota is merit-based. These scholarships are not based on need:

  • 3.0 GPA (no grade less than a C)

North Dakota also operates a scholarship program for critical needs occupations:

The Dakota Corps Scholarship

This program provides full tuition and fees for students who have a 2.8 GPA and agree to enter and work in one of these fields in South Dakota:

  • teaching K-12 music, special education, or foreign language in a public, private, or parochial school
  • teaching high school math or science in a public, private, or parochial school
  • working as a licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, or in other allied health care fields

The service obligation for this scholarship is the number of years it was received + one more year. If this obligation is not met, then the scholarships turn into low-interest, state government school loans which must be repaid.

South Dakota particpates in federal student loan forgiveness programs for health and education, but has no separate state loan forgiveness programs.

State public employees are entitled to pay a half-rate tuition price at any college controlled by the South Dakota Board of Regents.
