Besides the finances, what would not qualify you for the Federal Pell Grant?

What would not qualify you for the Federal Pell Grant, besides the finances?

ANSWER:

There are several things that would disqualify you:

  • If you are not a citizen or an eligible non-citizen, you would not be able to get a Pell grant. There are many classes of eligible non-citizens, so it is easier to say which non-citizens are not eligible:

    • people with Family Unity Status

    • temporary residents under the Legalization or Special Agricultural Worker program

    • people with non-immigrant visas

  • If you do not have a high school diploma (or equivalent) or passed an ability-to-benefit test, or have been homeschooled, you cannot get a Pell grant.

  • If you are enrolled in an elementary or secondary school, you do not qualify for Pell grants.

  • You cannot be incarcerated in a federal or state penal institution and get Pell grants.

  • If you are male and 18-25 years, you cannot get a Pell grant if you have not registered with Selective Service.

  • If you are not enrolled in a degree or certificate program in an eligible institution, you cannot get Pell grants.

  • If you are in default on a federal loan,or you owe an overpayment of federal financial aid (grants or loans) and you have not made a repayment arrangement, you cannot get Pell grants.

  • If there is a judgment lien on your property for a debt owed to the United States (for instance, income tax) you cannot receive a Pell grant.

  • If you have already earned a four-year degree, you cannot get a Pell grant (and if you have earned more than enough credits for a degree, but have not accepted one, your school can deny you the grant).

  • If you have received Pell grants for eighteen semesters, you cannot get another one.

  • If your school has determined that you are not making satisfactory academic progress, you cannot get a Pell award.

  • Finally, if you were convicted of any drug charge, while you were receiving federal student aid, you must resolve that issue, before you can get a Pell grant.
