Pell Grant Amounts...No Change for 2011-2013

Pell grant amounts will not change for the next two years if Congress approves the new health care bill. This is a very different outcome than was envisioned under SAFRA, which had increases starting next year. Under this new combined health care/student loan bill, maximum Pell grants will amount to $5,900 in ten years- much less than last year's projection.

Chase education loans- the FFELP ones, will be suspended April 17 for the 2009-10 school year. Chase bank will not accept applications after that date and will not participate in the FFELP for the 2010-11 year. This action is being taken because the Ensuring Continued Access to Student Loans Act (ECASLA) is expiring. Chase will only resume these federal student loans if Congress extends it. Chase private loans for college continue to be offered.

The FAFSA application online had a slight change on Feb. 27. The Are you male or female? question was moved to below Your Date of Birth. Apparently, many people were leaving it blank and flags were being raised by Selective Service when they could not verify registration (of females). It was felt that originally it was too close to pre-filled data, and so it was being overlooked.
