Direct Loans Servicing Center, Payments, Forms, Information
The direct loans servicing center is where you can make all direct loan payments, (subsidized, unsubsidized, and PLUS loans) and get forms for forbearance, deferment, discharge, forgiveness and student loans consolidation.
Note: You cannot make any loan payments over the phone, even if their website is down. You can wire a payment though, if you need to.
You will be able to:
make online payments (at least one day in advance)
view account balances and status
change billing options (like your due date)
enroll in electronic services (auto-debit)
change your repayment type (standard, graduated, extended)
You do not need your FAFSA PIN number to download blank forms, but any forms you wish to fill out and submit online will require it.
If you wish to make interest-only payments while in school (check the accrued interest calculator to see how much this can save you) you will have to contact the Direct Loan Servicing center. The default plan is to defer interest until repayment after graduation.
This government website has just become operational (Oct.14) again, after two weeks of fits and starts with borrowers not being able make their regular loan payments. The Department of Education claims that this new site will be operational 24/7- an improvement over the old site which had scheduled maintenance every Friday from 4:00- 7:00 A.M. (EST)- when no payments could be made.
The old site was frequently down and often didn't show account changes that were made over the phone or by mail. On occasion, your online account showed inaccurate information, even when it was recorded accurately at the Department of Education and also was showing up correctly on their screens. All these problems are now supposedly cured. We'll see.
ACS borrowers will be familiar with the new registration process; it mirrors the one used for their FFELP borrowers' loans. To Direct loan customers who only had to remember the first two letters of their last name, last 4 numbers of their SS# and of course their FAFSA PIN, it might be a challenge.
Just to be clear- this is the site where your Direct loan is serviced, not the direct loans gov site where you apply for a loan.
