Does my pell grant get mailed to me?

Does my pell grant get mailed to me?
My Pell grant is more than my tuition. Can I use the other money for supplies that I need for school?
Someone please explain. Thanks

ANSWER:

Your Pell grant award will be sent to your school. It is up to your school to arrange (with you) how any excess funds will be handled.

Your school must notify you before they disburse any Pell grant funds. They have to tell you:

  • how much money your Pell grant will be

  • how they will apply or distribute the funds; and

  • when they will apply or distribute the money

If your school wants to hold the funds to apply to anything other than tuition, fees, and room and board- they must get your consent.

Most schools will first credit your account for those charges and then refund the student the rest of the balance- by check, electronic funds transfer, or cash (which you would sign for).

You may use the Pell grant for anything that would be included in your cost of attendance for school (including books and supplies).
