As a student, I feel strongly that the current college tax credit structure should be extended.
Tuition costs are on a seemingly endless spiral into the stratosphere. Gaining the refund will make life easier for me. That one grand will pay for all my books with enough spare change to handle any emergencies that come up. I'm working full-time during breaks just to pay for books and board for the following semester. With this refund, I may actually be able to relax during my vacation.
This economy may have recovered, but the colleges are pinching pennies like its worse than ever. I feel fortunate to be attending a private school despite the price. My friends at public universities are facing additional fees on things that have been traditionally free.
Now Congress wants to remove my college tax credit just to fund health care or something else that doesn't benefit the healthy people who actually have jobs and do stuff instead of sitting in a hospital dying. Money that could pay for the future of America is instead being used to prop up its past.
Congress is too blinded by money-waving lobbyists like AARP to help the poor, common college student. Things like that are why my generation doesn't vote: we've lost faith in a system that only rewards those with money already. This credit should be made permanent, so that future college students should benefit by this generation.
