Extra Pell grant money left after my tuition is covered?

by paul
(pa)

What if I am eligible for a $4,000.00 Pell grant and my tuition is covered at $3,200.00? Is the balance returned or am I able to use this for books and/or living expenses as a full-time student?

Answer:

The balance of the Pell grant will be returned to you. There are various ways that a school can deliver your refund. Anything besides an actual check (a bookstore credit, electronic deposit into a student's bank account, opening a new account, or issuing a debit card) requires the consent (in writing) of the student.

New regulations for 2011-2012 require that the school must arrange for funds to be given to Pell grant students for their books and supplies, no later than the seventh day from the start of the new pay period (semester).

You can contact your financial aid office and find out how your school prefers to issue Pell grant refunds.
