Internet Libraries: A Source of Cheap College Textbooks

Internet libraries can save you money on textbooks as well as provide added resources for your research papers. However, only paid subscription libraries can offer you access to the millions of academic sources that are protected by copyright.

A subscription ebook library will contract with hundreds of academic publishers to offer material that cannot be found for free on the internet.

These publishers provide their latest editions of texts and their most current journal articles. A library service that offers this will not be free.

What is free though, is their library book search. You can search the library for the books you need, before deciding whether to subscribe.

Questia.com is one of the largest of these subscription libraries. It has over 3 million books and journal articles, all kept up to date with the latest editions and issues.

Their fees are reasonable, too:

  • $19.95 per month; or
  • $49.95 per quarter (3 months); or
  • $99.95 per year

If you join, you'll have access to features that make studying, researching and writing papers, easier. You can:

  1. search within the entire library or a single publication
  2. take notes on a source, highlight any parts, bookmark them for easy retrieval and save your personalized copies on the site
  3. automatically format footnotes and bibliographies according to MLA, APA, or the Chicago Manual of Style

Aside from your assigned texts, the Questia library is useful and convenient for finding materials to write term papers on. You can draw on more sources and they are instantly available to go back to.

The only drawback with Questia is that it does not include subject material about business or the physical sciences. So if your major is not within the social sciences or humanities, you should look for other cheap ways to buy college textbooks online. (And to maximize your savings, sell used textbooks when you're done with them.)

If you are not ready to invest in a Kindle for really cheap college textbooks, or an ereader to read textbooks online, you could buy downloadable textbooks or even rent textbooks, but a Questia subscription will save you more money. If you only find one of your textbooks in their database, it pays to subscribe and gain access to their entire library.
