Pell Grant Eligibility with Military Benefits

Can a veteran receiving retirement, disability and veteran education benefits, get a Pell grant?

ANSWER:

Yes, Pell grants can be received along with military benefits. There are a couple of reasons for this

  1. Pell grants cannot be reduced on the basis of any other aid that a student receives. Other types of federal student aid like ACG/SMART grants, campus-based loans or subsidized Stafford loans, can be reduced when your financial aid package is put together. However Pell grants (for those students with an eligible EFC) are the base of all financial aid packages.

  2. Federal Veterans’ Educational Benefits are not even used in the income calculations for a student's expected family contribution, and in 2009, a new law excluded these from even being considered "estimated financial assistance" by a college.

Even if your Pell grant results (because of your other benefits) in you receiving more than your cost of attendance for the school, it cannot be cut from your student financial aid. However, other aid you might ordinarily be entitled to, such as state grants, can be eliminated.
