Looking for Really Cheap College Textbooks to Save Money?
The best source I've found for really cheap college textbooks is the Kindle . | Prices for textbooks in the Kindle store are a fraction of what they are in your college bookstore. They have a wide selection of college textbooks (31,000) so that you can be fairly sure they'll have what you need. Amazon just dropped the price on a Kindle by $70, so its a great time to buy. (I bought one for my daughter in early June 2010. Three weeks later, the price dropped. I was able to get a $70 refund because Amazon has 30 day price protection on all their products. They have great service- no hassles, no wait and pleasant attitudes.) |
Look at the difference in prices for some commonly used texts:
College Textbook Prices
| Title | List Price | Kindle Price | Principles of Economics (Mankiv) | $229.95 | $124.16 | Calculus: Early Transcendentals (Stewart) | $224.95 | $141.70 | | The Philosophy of Literature: Contemporary and Classic Readings - An Anthology (John & Lopes) | $139.95 | $40.01 | Computational Physics: An Introduction (Vesely) | $134.00 | $86.75 |
Look up the prices of some Kindle textbooks and see if you can find some really cheap college textbooks. You should be able to compare what it would cost you to buy from your school bookstore to what it will cost to buy college textbooks online, because schools are required to provide early pricing information, starting July 1, 2010. Your school will also have to calculate your cost of attendance based on the price of textbooks obtained through the school bookstore, regardless of where and how you actually get them. And your financial need and your financial aid is partially based on the this cost of attendance estimate (along with income and asset data). So, your estimated cost of attendance will not change even if you actually spend less on textbooks.
Download College Textbooks Online- Benefits? Drawbacks?
Other than lower textbook prices, the main benefit of buying Kindle texts is the convenience. Instead of going to the bookstore, fighting crowds, and lugging a bunch of books around, you have all your books in a device that weighs less than a paperback book. And books published before 1923 (1.8 million of them) are free. The Kindle is wireless, downloads books without a computer, and has no software to install- you can use it right out of the box. A single battery charge will keep it going for a week without recharging (charger included). So what are the drawbacks? The only one I can think of is that you won't be able to sell text books back at the end of the semester. But they'll be cheaper up front and anyway- checking for the best sell-back prices, packing up the books, and mailing them out (You don't sell them back to your school, do you? Much better prices elsewhere.) is a pain.
You can get really cheap college textbooks online if you buy a Kindle . The price is now $189 (reduced from $259). So, for about the price (or less) of one textbook, you can save on every textbook throughout your whole time in college.
