Rising costs of college -- Americans need help

by Mom of 3 stressing out
(Fort Wayne, IN)

Americans need help paying for college to ensure the future of our children and our country. I have twins entering college this fall as freshmen and will have another child entering college in 2 years. My husband and I both work demanding jobs to provide for our family. We're penalized for working and wanting our kids to go to college. We've tried to save for college costs, yet our children qualify for no federal assistance other than the $5500 student loan. College costs worry me sick. Please listen to us and extend the opportunity tax credit -- for the sake of our children and our future!

Also, why do certain ethnic groups and/or foreigners get huge financial aid simply because of their ethnicity? If we're all to be treated equally, race or ethnicity shouldn't play into financial aid, right? Financial aid should be based on financial need.....not ethnicity.
==================================================

In many cases, financial need coincides with ethnicity- and there are many types of "financial aid". Even unsubsidized federal loans are considered financial aid awards.

One of the biggest advantages a middle class family can have on the FAFSA is having siblings in college at the same time. Also, you have some time before your youngest goes; research scholarship opportunities. There could be a scholarship connected to any of your family's activities, your child's intended field of study, or even local government, business, religious or professional organizations- the possibilities are endless to supplement the college tax credit.
